PRODUCTION LOG

June (Year 10)
At the end of last year after we had finished our course work on perfume we started brainstorming a few ideas about what we would do. We decided between a music video and a three minute opening of a movie. We finally chose the movie opening and in the genre horror/thriller. We had a few ideas and wrote some down to save for next year.

Thursday 8th September
This is the day we started officially planning. We already had our full idea that we all contributed to and finally came up this lesson with a bit of a twist in a story. We played around with Dream Weaver and downloaded the indent called 'Twisted' and imported it in.

Thursday 15th September
This lesson we wrote our treatment on our story. My group and I made sure we explained in detail what we planed to do. We worked very well together and all contributed some great ideas!

Thursday 22nd September

This lesson we watched the first 15 minutes of Knight and day. The opening was very good and my group and I really liked how Tom Cruise's character was filmed from behind for a long time in the opening before his face was finally shown. We have added this idea to our opening, only showing the back of the characters head at the very beginning. I think this adds suspense and mystery.

We then watched the opening of 'Don't look now' and this was helpful also as we liked the types of angles and shots. It made the viewer scared and tense which is what we wish to achieve in our movie opening.

Thursday 29th September
Today in class my group and I made a rough first plan of our story board on sticky notes. We read through our treatment we had made and did lots of rough drawings of what each clip was. There was a lot of drawings as we have lots of quick flashbacks at the end so had to think in detail what each one of them was.
A few of our rough story board drawings

Tuesday 4th October

Today I created a blog that will help me record all my research and planning online. I am linked to my class blog and my friends. It will be very useful to be able to link up with the rest of my group even when I am not in class as I will be able to see what they have planned online. I added a link to my Twitter pages as well. For homework I went back and wrote about previous dates on my blog and what I have done so far.

My teacher will check my blog posts a few times a week.

Monday 10th October
Today we finished our story board on sticky notes. We also wrote down what kind of angles we want on each shot and looked at them in more detail. We discussed what props and facilities we could use. We decided we would film at our school, a friends house, my living room and Bethanie's sisters car. At lunch we went and spoke to all the people we wanted to have in the film and everyone agreed including our drama teacher who we will also use. We wrote what props, clothes, scenery etc we would need and discussed when we would film each scene.

Tuesday 11th October
Today my group and I researched idents. We particularly liked the Twisted ident which features in all the Saw movies. We downloaded it and opened it on Adobe Premiere. We found out that as well as an ident for our movie opening we also need a co-production. We plan to make our own ident as well in Adobe After Effects.
This is a screen shot of our research into production company idents

Thursday 13th October
Today I researched about what kind of person I want one of the characters to look and be like. Personally I was focusing on the boy in the opening. We are using a friend from our year in our school to act him. His father and him are originally from Poland and have come here due to the fathers business. The son Michael Jasinski has an English accent with a little foreign twist. He is shy and alkward and does not want anything to do with his fathers illegal work.

Tuesday 18th October
Today we decided what our movie would be called. We looked for inspiration and I spotted these danger signs on the walls and we thought it was a good idea if we call it something to do with one of the signs. We really liked 'Unauthorized' because it linked with our movie and also sounded good. My group also thought we should add a number to the title to make it a bit different. We thought Unauthorized16 was good especially as the main girl Grace is aged 16.
Sign we got inspiration from

After this we photographed all our post-it note drawings and uploaded them to Imovie to make them into a slideshow in order so we can now watch our story board from the computer.

We also talked about the art of the title. In my group we looked at three film introductions and analysed how they introduced their titles to help us get ideas for our very own title and where abouts in the scene we should introduce it.
The first film we looked at was called Buried

The title is show in this particular film in the third box.The film opening in this film doesn't particularly reveal anything in the film so it gives it a very eary atmosphere. The font goes in very well with the theme of colours which is constant throughout the film introduction, the yellow stand out very well against the black and the transitions throughout introductions are very smooth.

Buried is a 2010 Spanish thriller film directed by Rodrigo Cortés. It stars Ryan Reynolds, and was written by Chris Sparling. The film revolves around Iraq-based American truck driver Paul Conroy (Reynolds), who, after being attacked, finds himself buried alive in a wooden coffin, with only a lighter, flask, flashlight, knife, glowsticks, pencil and a mobile phone to help him escape before the oxygen in the coffin runs out. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the film has received a positive critical reception.

The second film we looked at from the art of the title website was called The Pacific. The scene has many extreme close up shots to capture the audiences attention. http://www.artofthetitle.com/2010/06/14/the-pacific/#more-5539

The Pacific is a 2010television series produced by HBO, Seven NetworkAustralia, Sky Movies,Playtone and DreamWorksthat premiered in the United States on March 14, 2010.

The colours used in the introduction are very dark dreary colours such as greys and blacks especially red, this is used because the film is all about the time or war and the colours represent the feeling of the soldiers. The colour red also represents the scene of death which you can tell is constant throughout the film. The introduction uses a variety of sketches because soldiers sketched to present their feelings, some of the sketches actually even turned into real people which I thought was quite clever. In this film introduction the title is shown in the first scene, it is shown very small to add detail to what is happening in the background where the charcoal is writing on the paper.

In class we made our own Art Of the Title for our opening scene of the horror. However we then changed James to Joe. Mr Kimber worked part time and was hard to get hold of so we asked another teacher Mr PA.

 Monday 14th November
Today we shot our scene three at school. We used a teacher as our male character and our school friend Abi as Gemma our main girl.
We used a room next to our art room called the kiln room which was messy and looked the part. Our props were: a big studio light for extra lighting, a science lab coat, a scalpole with out the blade in it and a table for the girl to be 'operated on'
We directed the man to look straight into the camera when delivering his line 'Well done son. Shes perfect' so our audience feel like they are in the movie and it seems a lot more real for them and made sure the camera was tilting up so he appeared bigger and intimidating.
We also filmed the girl in a separate white room where we took a few shots of her waking up confused and realizing she has been taken. We plan to use lots of these short clips in our last scene where there are lots of fast small flash backs to create tension.

  Tuesday 15th November

In today's lesson we started to edit our 3rd scene. We used Imovie to edit it all and put it in the correct order; choosing the best footage.
However I had the idea of overlaying a particular clip of our actress Abi so it looked like she was waking up confused and the audience will feel the same. We could not achieve this on Imovie so worked on Adobe After Effects to try figure out how to make the same clip play at the same time but having one delayed and being able to see them both at the same time. We changed the opacity to 50% on both of them so we could achieve this effect.  This is a great effect and makes her look very disorientated.

15th November - 1st Deceber

In the lessons between these dates I have been filming and editing our scene 3 and the flash backs. This scene is also are hardest scene as it contains loads of use on Adobe premier which we have never used before so we have to learn and edit at the same time. I found this fairly challenging at first as there is so many things you can do on this program but soon our group all learned how to use it.
We achieved a great overlay of the same image of our character Grace however it took a lot of work but we where able to do it in the end.

We spent a lot of time editing the scene together and using a variety of different camera angles to add suspense, this is because the scene is very suspense filled with lots of tension and to keep the audience on edge. Whilst editing we added transaction enabling what we had filmed to run smoothly into each other, however on some shots we actually enhanced the jerkiness of the transaction as it added to the desired tension look we wanted.
We also made our own ident on Premier Pro called Callis, we made it so that the title spins very tightly then un spins, this will be played after the twisted productions is showed which has been featured in films such as saw so fits our genre very well.

2nd December
Today we did the last of our filming at a friends house after school. We organized people to go to our friends house and aranged lifts with mine Bethanie's and Jemima's parents to take everyone to our friends. We then set up the set for our party scene and put everyone in appropriate clothing. Our main girl Grace wore a leopard print dress because we had filmed her in it before when we filmed scene 3. I made her make up heavy and messy so it was clear she was the main girl, but making it smudgy and messy so it showed that she was under the influence of alcohol.
While our characters Grace and the boy were there we quickly used a friend's mums car to film scene 2. We kept the engine running so it was more realistic and gave him some lines to say that would make it easier for the audience to understand that he was on the phone to his father. We filmed some shots of Grace in the back seat clearly unconscious.

5th-12th December
We have edited all of our part scene and car scene footage which took a long time as we had to change lighting, volume of clips, length of all the clips. We also had to pick out the best of what we had filmed which took a long time and then put it in the correct order. After editing it all we had to make a title,  our own ident and add in captions for the main characters. Benthanie made the ident in Adobe Premiere and I made the Title 'Unauthorized16'.
Our official title
We also found and chose music to go through out the opening and got a heart beet sound effect and baby's laugh to play with our own ident.

When we watched it all back we showed some people in the class and we asked them a few questions. They said it was slightly unclear that the very end clip was meant to be a flashback of what had happened before the first scene. We agreed so decided to add in a small time and date at the begining of scene one and end of scene 3 to indicate the times they were at. This made it more clear and obvious for people seeing it for the first time.

Thursday the 5th of January

Today in lesson we edited some more and almost finished. We added times and dates onto the corner of two scenes to make it clear to the viewer that at the end it flashes back to the very beginning and what was just played was actually the end of the movie. We made the date at the beginning scene the 15th and the end scene the 16th. We made it this to connect back to the title as the title also includes the number 16, we did this to make a subtle link. In this lesson we also cut out some of the scenes of dancing because we realized that it was too much and it was unnecessary.

Wednesday the 11th of January

Today in lesson we moved some clips around and put a few of the flashbacks in new places so that our film opening was clearer and made more scene. It was now in a more chronological order and was easier to follow. Next lesson we were ready to export our film opening to then put it onto youtube and Facebook for audience feedback for our PowerPoint

Tuseday the 12th of January
In this lesson we exported our film opening and the put it onto youtube so that we could get feedback and then inprove it. We also put the video onto facebook so that people would comment on it and tell us their views. Another thing we did is mentioned it on twitter to get as many people as we could to view it. This is the link to watch it on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxjI4XuoN-Y

Tuesday 17th of January

Today in lesson we viewed the feedback we got from the viewers that watched our movie opening that I had put on my Facebook and that we had uploaded to YouTube. It was all very positive and some people left some great feedback with tips and improvements. We decided to take all of these suggestions on board and changed a few of things. We dubbed over the speaking as some people said it was sometimes hard to understand what they were saying. A group of year 10 Media students said they were confused of why the movie suddenly went back to the very beginning after she had been captured and operated on. We decided to change the very end as we did not want people to be confused on the story line. We downloaded a voice recording program called Audacity and recorded Jemima whispering (pretending to be Grace) 'I remember, my party, yesterday'. We then edited it on the program and encanced it and made it have an eco. I think this adds a mysterious, confused tone to her voice. It suggests that she has just woken up from the operation and is in a great deal of pain; she tries to remember what had happened any why she is where she is and runs through the previous night in her head. The voice over makes it clearer and we hope this has helped them to follow the story.

Thursday 19th of January

Today me and Jemima tried to edit the short clip of the doctor cutting Grace's skin. We wanted it to look as realistic as possible so tried to create blood coming out of the cut.

However we finally decided that it did not look very professional and was not worth the time as it was very time consuming and did not give the desired effect.
